Beef shares are a very economical way to get local beef right from the farm, to your kitchen. Beef, and other meats, offered in grocery stores are often imported from another country, as the US imports anywhere from 8%-20% of its beef, much from Central and South America, but some as far away as New Zealand. Much of this beef is straight grain fed, and thus heavily subsidized, which is why it can be sold at such a low price. However, the Grassfed American Beef market is not subsidized, so all the cost of raising fresh, humanely raised, local and grass fed beef is on the farmer. Therefore, it is very challenging to keep cost low, but we and others like us strive to do so.
The big plus side? You and your family KNOW where your meat is from. You know what the cows ate. You know they lived a good life grazing grass as a cow should, with plenty of open air and space. You know they have not been pumped full of things that may be illegal to give cattle in the US. And you know they are fresh...they are raised here, they are processed here, and the meat comes right from a butcher to you. Even if we have overflow and have to freeze some for later...it is still WAY fresher than what you can get on your table, from 2-3,000 miles away.
